Original Item: Only One Available. This very ingenious instrument primarily made from brass with a wood handle is a private purchase item for a British officer on the western front.
It is known as a "trench periscope" and extending to 18-inches in length allowing an officer to view whatever lay in front of the trench he was in without exposing him to enemy fire. The adjustable eye piece is located 13-inches below the viewing lens and is nicely marked:
The wood handle measures approximately 9-inches tall is detachable so the unit can be easily accommodated in an officer's personal bag. Still retaining much of the olive drab paint finish over the brass this is a very fine example of what lengths men would go to avoid German snipers whose principal duty at the time was to pick off officer's in any enemy position. Still fully functional with clear lenses and ready to display!
